Well....As Jeppe says...Lack of posts. I have been meaning to write about this artist for quite some time, but hasn´t come around to it. Well untill now. So here goes.

The Werneckes is a one man project by a guy named Jacob Moeller, based in Montreal, Canada. He just released his second album (to my knowledge) by the name "Cycle". His music is a compilation of keys, folk music, flanging guitars, loops and much more. You can´t really box it. It´s kind a mellow and i really like it. First off, allow me to apoligize for the recent lack of posts; exams and general busy'ness (it's a word! or maybe not...) has had us all hanging on the ropes, but hopefully we will manage to make up for the lost time soon. So thanks for still reading.

Secondly - and much more importantly - the new album from the The Cure is ready but if you need to check it out before buying you can listen to the entire thing on their MySpace here (usual less-than-perfect MySpace quality, but hey - it's better than nothing). After the first listen I am very positive and hopeful; it's The Cure the way I've always preferred them: layers of beatiful guitars, firm basslines tieing it all down and Robert's Smiths's vocals filled with desperation, tenderness and madness all at once. It's dark but not without a certain pop sensibility to boot. Confused? No need to be, go listen for yourself, for crying out loud.

I don´t really know that much about this guy, besides that he is from Leeds, England. His describtion of himself or whatever it is, on virb.com goes like this "A computer from comet, a piano from the parish church, a broken microphone stolen from university, a herbal nun in the wardrobe, a grizzly bear under my bed and finally a young man from Leeds - Luumu -" But who cares, as long as he makes great music. Sometimes I can't believe my own luck, most recently being in attendance at the Bon Iver show right here in Århus, Denmark saturday night. One of those rare moments when a packed club actually quiets down and listens. My expectations were through the roof, but so was the band's performance - pretty low-key, all seated but playing with an intensity that didnt require anyone standing. Those of you who have been following Justin Vernon and co. online might know that they are out and about playing a new song called Blood Bank - which in my opinion in pretty freakin' great. We've written about both of these bands earlier concerning their very promising debut EP's, and this week sported a full length album from both! I've had a chance to listen intensely to 'em and I'm already ready to cast my vote for this year's best Danish records. Choir Of Young Believers are more oriented towards a the full-out epic pop, whereas Small excells in the dual-vocal guitarnoise synth pop that goes so well with a sunny day. My music collection has been greatly upgraded with these two releases.

I recently received a couple of tracks from this band "Black Golden Bull". The music is country leaning against americana. They discribe their own music as "low-fi pop, and vocals registering somewhere between Roy Rogers and Sufjan Stevens". Not bad.......that is if it´s true. And....it is. I really think this is great, and you should take a listen to it.

I just got back from a few weeks vacation, so what better way to sink back in to normality than by going to a The National show in my home city? Since I've never seen them perform before I didn't quite know what to expect from this bunch of ageing family men... They certainly didn't go all-out rock'n'roll bonkers, but with their particular brand of music in mind, that might have seemed a bit over the top. What they did do was focus on the songs (as they deserve), and play a tight and melancholy show with the odd ballad and/or rock-out ending. Needles to say, I was very pleased with the way things turned out. And even better; they played a brand new tune that could end up really quite amazing when it eventually ends up on an album in the (hopefully) near future. Someone taped it at their Copenhagen gig a few nights earlier, so here goes:

According to last.fm Dr. Dog music sounds like.... “There’s a little folk, blues, indie rock, soul, bluegrass—and a whole lot of down-home harmonizing. I recently recieved a mail from this artist. I didn´t really got around to listen to her music. And what a shame, cause she makes great music. Pop music with a hint of Jazz, and then she has a voice that just sends you in orbit around, well at least your stereo. Last year she put out her second record "Girls and Boys". Her music reminds me of Polly Paulusma, so if you like Ingrid Michaelson, you should definitely check out Polly.

With their newly released album Partie Traumatic Blacks are continuing along the path they started out on with their curiously titled debut EP Wizard of Ahhhs. It's indie, it's pop, it's catchy and it's enjoyable. If you're into danceable rock/pop garnered with frantic high pitched boy-girl versus and melodies up the wazoo, chances are you are going to dig this. I like the cocky atiitude that's a sure sign of the bands low average age, best illustrated by this quote from the song I've linked below: "I didn't mean to do you no harm, I just understimated my charm again."Good stuff.

As Jeppe said in a earlier post, it has been awhile since he last put op a post, and that goes for me to. I´m finally done with doing different paper works, and now its summertime.....thank god. To kick in the summer here some great tracks for your pleasure. The first one is from Brassica aka. Michael Anthony Wright, a young guy from London. He is set to put out his new record 21 july at Tartaruga records, which earlier this spring put out Bleeding Heart Narratives debut album "All that was missing we never had in the world". The second track is from the fantastic youngster Khonnor, which we have blogged about aerlier. Its an old track from his first EP "Lost Pets". Though its from 2003 it´s still rocking....!!

It's been a while since my last post, the reason being that my aunt passed away rather suddenly 10 days ago. In light of that I haven't been as active in the discovery of new music as I usually am (heck, I only ordered my copy of the Fleet Foxes album a few days ago!...)but I'm feeling more or less back on track. So in absence of a "real" post here's a video that reminds me that life is not only brief, but beautiful. This year's SPOT festival has received some criticism for not being more focused on the up-and-coming underground bands that need (and deserve) some attention, but from a spectators view friday's line-up was pretty outstanding. And since the three of us spends all our waking hours at the festival we don't really have much time to blog about it, but here are some links to a few of the artists we enjoyed the most yesterday.

Ok, so this year's SPOT festival has officially begun, and as promised we will be there for the duration. Or some of us will...Or at least one of us... So as Martin recovered from his long trip and Jakob finished off some school work I was forced to go solo for the evening (if you call going with your girlfriend and one of her friends 'solo').

Calling this day 1 might be stretching it a little, since it's basically just an opening night that differs in style and content from the rest of the festival by show-casing not just Scandinavian artists but acts from all over Europe. I had the chance to go see a double concert with Danish indie-darlings Murder (see picture ) and DAAU from Belgium, none of which have released anything in the last couple of years. I'v always enjoyed Murder (and singer Bellenz' main act I Got You On Tape) on record and seeing them live was different but just as good.

I had no knowledge of DAAU (Die Anarcistische Abendunterhaltung or The Anarchistic Evening Entertainment, for the non-german speaking readers out there), but they turned out to be great as well. It's not every day you get the opportunity to listen to instrumental heavy/folk/jazz played on cello, double-bass, accordion, clarinet and a drum kit by 5 skinny, sweating and pale young men, and finding yourself thoroughly enjoying the whole thing. I've haven't been able to flush out any free songs for y'all with such short notice but here are some links if you are eager to find out more.

Another upcoming band that will be playing at Spot is Telli Bill. It´s a four member band from Aalborg, that used to play a more rock inspired kind of music. But on their latest ep they have gone softer, and i kinda like it. You should check it out, im going too. The rumor is that they are a great live band.

I really don´t know that much about Spejderrobot, except that his real name is Mikael Elkjær. His music is a good portion of electronica, some might call it low ambient. He recently released his first album "Falder baglæns ind i igår", which you can purchase here. If you like his music you can attend his concert at the spot festival where he will be playing friday evening.
Later friday evening you should go heck out Snöleoparden, who had his record debut in march this spring. Go get his record "Snöleoparden" here. If you a this point isn´t hammered by consuming booze then you should check out the danish constellation Efterklang.

Another great Danish band for you; The Rhonda Harris is Danish composer, producer and singer Nikolaj Nørlund's band project that releases albums every now and then. I've found their previous albums to be of some what unstable quality, but their latest effort Here's The Rhonda Harris had me hooked from the get-go. Nørlund is often described as the godfather of Danish indie music (whatever that means...), and the fact remains that he has collaborated with pretty much every Danish artist worth giving a damn about, but with this record there's no doubt that he makes a great presence up front himself.

I really don't know alot about this young guy Pogo. He makes a mix of electronic music and film samples in a kind of remix/remake and it's has a melancolic sound to it. The song "Alice" consists of 90 procent sample from the movie "Alice in Wonderland", the result is a grovy pop song, great for any dancefloor. Check this out, it's very good. I never really understood the hype on Animal Collective and the sideprojects of the members, until now. Today I took the time and sat down and really listen to one of the people behind the fuzz and it started to make sense. I listened to Panda Bears "Person Pitch" for a couple of hours. Panda Bear sounds alot like Beach Boys but if you can look past that "Person Pitch" is a mighty fine record and will reward anyone one listen, one then once. Enjoy.

Friday night proved to dish out one of those moments where you are unexpectedly and positively surprised to hear something live that you have only listened to on record. COYB is the project of the Greek/Danish/Indonesian guitarist and singer Jannis Makrigiannis and he released the EP Burn The Flag last year to great critical acclaim. Here's why I was surprised: The EP is quite low-key, it has a lot of instruments, but everything is only implied. But with him on stage (and it was a small stage!) he brought 7 musicians playing everything from percussion to the cello and violin, and it was amazing! Here's a song from the fore-mentioned EP, but please - if you ever have the opportunity to hear it live don't hesitate. And I will be seeing them again soon at the annual SPOT Festival right here in Århus...

I previously wrote about the danish female singer Annika Aakjær on this blog, and that she was set to have her record debut sometime this spring. Now it´s here. "Lille Filantrop" it´s called, and i must say that i was really looking forward to listen to what she and former Ibens bassplayer Henrik Marstal had come up with. I somestimes miss the mellow mood that came from her demo songs where it only were her voice and guitar that was in focus. But I still think she has made a really great record. A glorious career awaits here, im sure of that.

A few days ago I had had a long hard day at work and had been gone from 7.30 in the morning to 10.30 in the evening, so before bed I just wanted to watch my favorite Danish TV show called Den 11. time (transl: the eleventh hour) which is a show about everything and nothing and sometimes features some great live performances (Efterklang, Teitur, El Perro del Mar and so forth). As it happens I fell asleep on my couch before the show started, but I woke just in time to catch an amazing performance by Maria Køhnke doing a live rendition of the song Cardboard Heart. Not only is the song beautiful, but it was accompanied by stunning visuals made by a couple of cardboard theater enthusiasts. I was in that state of almost-awake-almost-sleep that always seems to last a few minutes leaving me completely open to impressions as if they were a dream and I was absolutely blown away. I'm sorry I can't embed a video, but go here and watch it, just scroll down and select the clip (and yes, it plays on macs). The album Collector has been out for a few months and can be purchased on eMusic, Vibrashop and iTunes.

I know I know, this isn't as new as a lot of other stuff out there, but it's just so goddamn good that I would feel embarrassed NOT writing about it. I actually got this record some time last year, but never got around to listening much to it for one reason or another. But during the last week, it's been pretty much on repeat on my computer, my iPod or my phone whenever I left the apartment - strange how there's a time and a place for certain music to really get to you... Phosphorescent has some of the same 'cottage-on-a-hill-in-a-the-woods-somewhere' feel to it as say, Bon Iver, with it's sparse instrumentation, crackling falsetto vocals and strong melodic drive. Listen to the opening track from the album called Pride, and don't be afraid to tell us what you think of it. Enjoy

Childs is an electronica duo from Mexico City. They say themselves that they are inspired by icelandic elfin pop, and nineties indie rock. And yes I have mentioned some bands before that have listened a lot to Sigur Rös, and yet again here´s one of them. But still I think they manage to make their own sound, and not just be yet another copy. Their last album was launced in 2006 and goes by the name "Yui". I think it's kind of strange that Simon Lynge is almost invisible in the danish media and if you search on HypeM for Simon Lynge you can't find one post about him, until now! His debut record just released didn't even get reviewed in Denmark as far as I know and that's sad. I first saw Simon play an acustic set at Spot festival in Aarhus a couple of years ago and I was blown away by his voice and songwriting. His debut album has been a while under way but it was worth the wait. The album sounds like a mix between Teitur and Josh Rouse, well made melodies and great vocal work. The album is released digitally on a homepage called novatunes.com where you can get Simon's album as a free download if you make a novatunes account on the page. With thunderous riffs, dual guitar licks, mexican horns and bluegrass banjos og violins (or are they called fiddles in this context?) there are so many things that could go horribly wrong with the new Raconteurs album Consolers Of The Lonely but much to my satisfaction they don’t – it just plain works. Raconteurs are less dogmatic and more musical than White’s main gig with The White Stripes, and Benson’s pale-white-boy-soul vocals really sound amazing alongside White’s blazing guitar riff’orama; I can’t remember hearing his mastery of his six stringed instrument quite so outspoken before. To top it all off they’ve even included a few songs that almost falls into the ’ballads’ category, which only adds to the overall balance and feel of the album.

I’ve never been much into The White Stripes or even the first The Raconteurs album, but this is to good to not let you guys know about it – it’s out in stores now. Or sign up at e-music and get it (and a whole bunch of other great independent bands) at bargain prices. And check out the new video below.

Ef is a five member band based i Gotheburg, Sweden. They recently released their third record by the name "I Am Responsible". Thee, Stranded Horse is Yann Encre. He plays an instrument called a Kora with 24 strings and sings. The result is dreamy folk a bit like Joanna Newsom or Bon Iver but at the same time it's like nothing I have heard before. You must put your headphones on and give Yann Encre some of your time. If you like browsing in the search for you new favorite band, you're gonna love Virb - if you don't already know about it. Virb is very much like Myspace, which is a great site and you can find all music out there, but it really doesn't work that well and doesn't look good either. Virb is the next Myspace, only it looks nice, is clean and simple and more importantly: there is a lot of great music to find. I spent 30 min. browsing and found these two great bands. I guess you can find these bands on myspace as well but it's like Myspace is getting slowly overrun by commercials and stupid ads posted by bands that all sound alike. While Field Music is taking a break it's good to know that the individual members aren't quitting music all-together, and this release from the band's singer/guitarist David Brewis even makes me think that the Field Music break (apparently not break-up) is a good thing. His solo project is called School of Language and bears more than a little resemblance to his previous work with FM. The melodies are still spot-on hooks with a twist and the arrangements are eccentric without ever being over-the-top weird. The four part song Rockist is a great example of how something potentially annoying (the continuous repetition of Brewis making vowel sounds) can be implemented in just the right way to make it seem just right. Step into the world of Connor Kirby-Long. He works under many different names but is best know as Khonnor. Besides Khonnor he calls himself strange things like Gaza Faggot, Grandma and I, Cactus. His music is a beautiful and weird mix of electronic sounds, noise and guitar song writing. He uses low-tech instruments such as an instructional Japanese language course package's microphone, an amp, a guitar, and experimental electronics in his recordings which explore the relationship between language and sound. It sometimes sounds like a soundtrack to a David Lynch movie. Haunting and the kind of music that gets you in the right melancholic mood. He's not a great singer and not even a typical songwriter but there is just something about him that takes my breath away. If you give this kid (he's only 20 years old) a chance you might just fall in love to. The first song here is from his debut album under the name Khonnor called Handwriting. That album received some very good reviews and I think it is a masterpiece. The second song is under the alias Gaza Faggot and the last one his Grandma project. You can visit him on his myspace but there is very little info about him and buy his music here.

In September of 2006 former Band of Horses member Mat Brooke gathered 4 like-minded musicians and formed Grand Archives and now their debut album, the ingeniously titled The Grand Archives is flooding the streets with sunny harmonies. The music is similar to that of fore-mentioned BoH in many respects, but with a warmer feel to it. They are signed to the wonderful label Sub Pop, that has been kind enough to allow us all to download the opening track from the album. The Album "Hideout" from Dub Tractor aka. Anders Remmer is not exactly a new album. Actually is was released in 2006. I´ve always been a fond listener of Anders Remmers various projects, such as How Do I, Future3, People Press Play, Jet and of course Dub Tractor. Even though I like his music so much, I have never gotten around to "Hideout". I bought it a couple of weeks ago, and man did it blow me away!!
It´s a great album, and if you haven´t heard anything by Anders Remmer you owe it to yourself to go listen to some of his stuff. In the link below there are two songs (I Forgot and Hideout) from the "Hideout" album, and two other tracks that appear on different compilations.
